Reading books is not a very popular choice among mass. But reading is one of those habits that bring dramatic changes in a person’s life in the long run. It is not a surprise that almost all the top business magnates, political leaders, top notch athletes and creative artists among the world are READERS.

If you are reading this article, you too are a reader. Congratulations! You may not be a very hard core reader but still you are a reader as you are reading this article. This means that you learn by reading.

Reading itself has a lot of benefits. I might cover the benefits of reading in some other article. As a Life Coach In India I highly recommend people to read books on daily basis.

However, in this article I am sharing 10 unique self-help books that you should read in 2023. Why, because the content of these books is of practical value rather than of just philosophical value. All the books, I have mentioned shares certain techniques that will help a person get better and flourish in his or her personal & professional life.

So, let us get directly to the list….

1) Atomic Habits ~ James Clear

There is a reason that I have listed this book very first.

  • Atomic means smallest possible thing.
  • Habits mean actions that we do on daily basis.

And so, Atomic Habits means small habits that we do daily. Brushing before sleep, meditating daily, getting up early and work out, etc. are certain habits that can make us into a better & successful person.

This is something we all know but the problem is that it is very difficult for most of us to form a so called good habit and get rid of a so called bad habit. And here book comes to rescue.

The book covers the methodological science of how to form a habit. It explains how one can get better 1% every day. It explains 4 step process of

  • Cue
  • Craving
  • Response
  • Reward.

It also explains the process of forming a habit in 4 ways.

  • Make it easy.
  • Make it attractive.
  • Make it obvious.
  • Make it satisfying.

Through these steps one can very easily form a new habit and lose the older ones. The book explains in detail how this process is working for many successful people already. So get your copy now.

2) The Power Of Your Sub Conscious Mind ~ Dr. Joseph Murphy

This book was first published in 1963. Modern psychology has evolved too much since then. But still to this day the knowledge of this book is relevant to most of us.

This book talks about the power of our sub conscious mind. It talks about the methods of ancient healings. And in a very naïve way it explains how ancient sciences work. The author was not well informed about the ancient science but still the book can help a lot of people today.

It can help one heal physically, mentally. It can help a person grow in his or her professional life. It can also restore bitter relationships. 1 million copies are already sold. This book is one time read for sure.

3) The Alchemist ~ Paul Coelho

This is one of the most amazing books I have ever read in my life. No doubt, 65 million copies are sold already. It is a fiction book and I don’t read fiction. I don’t even read non-fiction much. I generally study ancient shastras (technical ones) like Hatha Vidya, Tantra Yoga, Vedanta, Kaula Gyan, etc. Such shastras holds the secrets of true human potential.

But someone recommended me this book and so I read it. It is an amazing book that takes you on a journey unforgettable. It is a story about Santiago from Andalusia in Spain. The boy is a shepherd. He loves a girl and intends to marry her and settle down.

But then he meets a gypsie. She tells him about a treasure near the pyramids in Egypt. He is a bit suspicious about her but then he gets certain hints from Mother Nature and he begins his risky journey.

The last portion of the book is mind blowing and will leave you in awe. This book tells us that many times we go out to find something that what we want, to learn that it is already inside us.

4) Life The Way You Design ~ Sahil Kumar Nagpal

If you know me then you might know this that I have written this book. So I won’t boast about how great this book is. Instead I am sharing this below link where you can find the details.

5) Predictably Irrational ~ Dan Ariely

Now, this book is not that famous but it is without a doubt ‘a must read for all’ types book. Why, because this book tells us how irrational decision we take in our daily lives. We often subconsciously believe that we are in charge of our decisions. But we are incapable of seeing the factors that affect our decisions.

We go to buy one t-shirt and end up buying 3 t-shirts. And we think that we got a great deal. One t-shirt is for Rs. 500 and there is an offer of ‘buy 2 get 1 free’. Now instead of spending Rs. 500 we spent Rs 1000. That extra Rs. 500 could have been invested in something else. That investment would have given appreciation over time. That appreciated money could have been used to buy other necessary things. But we end up buying t-shirt that degrades in terms of value from the moment we buy it.

Let us understand this by an example given in the book, let say you want to buy a magazine subscription. You have an option of buying digital subscription for 59 USD and hard copy subscription for 125 USD. Now when you have these two options you may select one of them depending upon your priority.

But game changes when third option is introduced that is digital plus hard copy and that too for 125 USD. It is very obvious that those who are opting for hardcopy will go for both the options as both the options are available at same price. But interestingly those want to buy digital copy at 59 USD are also now interested in buying both the options.

Many more such interesting studies have been shared in the book. Dan Ariely is a behavior economist and is working with many corporate giants. The book also explains that why we consistently overpay, underestimate and procrastinate. After reading this book you will notice many things that were unnoticed before.

6) How To Win Friends & Influence People ~ Dale Carnegie

This book was first published in 1936 and 15 million copies have been sold ever since. This book is an excellent book on science of social behavior. It deals wonderfully in interpersonal skills as well as intrapersonal skills.

Why this book ‘How To Win Friends & Influence People’ is important? Many of us are extremely talented but fail to speak up where it is necessary. We have a great idea but are reluctant to share it in the meeting. We want to express our love to someone but don’t know how to express it. We know it is not our fault but we are too much afraid and confused to explain that to other person.

Many opportunities are lost and many threats are encountered because of lack of communication skills in people’s life. This is a very basic book that can help lot of people.

7) Limitless ~ Jim Kwik

Jim Kwik is a brain coach and is appreciated by many celebrities. This book explains the art of learning anything faster. It also focuses on how to remember anything easily. The book also covers the concepts of The Flow. It will empower you to think efficiently.

The book covers certain basic techniques that anyone can do. I have not tried those techniques but I feel it may be useful to mass.

8) 80 20 Principle ~ Richard Koch

80/20 principle which is famously also known as Pareto Principle was first introduced by Vilfredo Pareto in 1800s. The principle explains that our 80% of success stems from 20% of results.

Whatever efforts we are putting into our daily life, 20% of the efforts contribute to our 80% of results. You are running a business with 100 clients. Only 20 clients out of 100 will be contributing your 80% of revenue. Your 20% of products would be yielding 80% of profits. Your 20% of food may be contributing to 80% of your weight gain.

Now this 80/20 ratio may change from situation to situation. In some situation it may be 90/10, in some it may be 70/30 and in some it may be 60/40. But the ratio always applies that suggests that a small amount of efforts is contributing in large amounts of outcome.

In many ways this book explains Effortless Efforts. Even in my workshop of Yoga Vidya and Body Mechanics & Mind Management I train people on how to put effortless efforts. Effortless efforts mean minimum effort maximum results. This training increases a person’s efficiency in personal and professional life.

If you are interested in such workshops you may drop a message or call on this number.

9) 48 Laws Of Power ~ Robert Greene

This book will be recorded in history without a doubt. But let me warn you, if you are infested by extreme positivity, if you keep on pressurizing yourself with positive thoughts even if you don’t feel like in some situation, if instead of finding the source of the problem and addressing it you keep on relying on positive thinking, then this book is not for you.

This book is only for those who are courageous enough to see the reality of life, even if it is too much bitter. Such people are meant to rule their domain. And this book will come as a guide book for them.

We often encounter politics in our daily life. This book covers 48 Laws that can be used in office politics, politics, business and everyday life. It helps us to understand how people can become manipulative. It explains how people and even sometimes we too use cunning strategies to achieve our goals.

After reading and understanding the fundamentals of this book one is so much empowered that he or she will not deviate even in the harshest of the environments. Many rap stars, politician & business magnates refer to this book.

10) Chanakya Neeti ~ Radhakrishnan Pillai

Everybody knows who Acharya Chanakya was. He was a politician, a teacher and a strategist around 2300 years ago. He is also said to be a king maker as he established Emperor Chandragupta Maurya. His real name was Vishnugupta and was also known by the name of Kautilya.

He has authored Arthashashtra, Chanakya Neeti and Sutra. Many people have translated his texts and also have done commentary on them. But Radhakrishnan Pillai is very well informed person on Chanakya. He has done PHD and also is consulted by many corporates and politicians as well on business strategies.

His book ‘Corporate Chanakya’ has a great impact on my life. During my business days it gave me a lot of insight on mindset of employees and that of entrepreneurs. I highly recommend his work to all.
