Loneliness | A Rising Mental Health Issue | Life Coach

In an article I was recently studying for my life coaching blog, I was surprised by the statistics. 16% of the world population is dealing with loneliness. It is almost one out of six.

As a life coach, I have observed that there are many reasons behind the growing problem of loneliness among people, but one cannot leave out the direct or indirect role of the growing toxic work culture among corporations in most countries.

Narayan Murthy, an inspiration to many promising entrepreneurs, is very vocal about the contributions of long working hours in India’s development. Countries like China and Japan are standing examples of how a country can rise from the depths of poverty to a thriving economy with sheer hard work.

But what many people forget is that anything beyond the necessary is poison. Success is not the question; the question is success at what cost? There is a very famous dialogue of Bruce Lee, “Like everyone else, you want to learn the way to win, but never to accept the way to lose, to accept defeat. To learn to die is to be liberated from it.”

Success At What Price?

Everyone is running behind success without addressing the most fundamental question. What is success? What are the different ways to be successful? Do we have to pay a high price to be successful?

In Japan, at a certain time, there was a rise in the use of sex dolls. People would prefer sex dolls over real relationships. They were so overloaded with work stress that they would prefer to buy a sex doll from a store and spend time with it, instead of going out and investing efforts and time in real people.

A recent study showed that in Britain, 1 out of 6 teenagers is either using AI agents as a romantic partner or at least knows someone who does. These studies show that either one is suffering from loneliness or is an indirect cause for loneliness of someone near and dear.

Negative Health Effects Of Loneliness

Loneliness is not only a social problem, but it also has a severe impact on physical and mental health. Anxiety, depression and suicidal symptoms are all direct causes of loneliness.

Weak heart, low blood pressure, metabolic disruption, immune system suppression, and other chronic issues are also developed because of loneliness.

Top Reasons For Loneliness

There are many reasons for loneliness, but here I will share what I have personally observed as a life coach.

  • Not choosing a life partner for a very long time.
  • Focusing too much on career.
  • Avoiding social gatherings.
  • Unhealthy Diet.
  • Toxic Work Culture.
  • Not taking enough me time.

Is There Only One Way To Success?

I have said this many times, where you will find a person who is extremely hard-working and sort of workaholic, you will also find a person who is the exact opposite and yet successful.

We have Cristiano Ronaldo as an inspiration who is extremely hardworking in his sport and overall fitness, and then on the other side, we have Lionel Messi, who is the exact opposite in terms of athletic fitness and yet equally effective in their sport.

We have very hardworking business leaders who works day and night. On the other side, we have Sridar Vembu, who is a living example of holistic success, visionary leadership, and nonconformist.

So being successful doesn’t mean you have to suffer. As a life coach, I have worked with many world leaders over the past two decades. What I have observed is that people who work very hard do so because they like it. It doesn’t mean that you have to do the same.

Signs Of Loneliness

Our body and mind give signals before breaking down. Whatever the problem is, physical or mental, most of us get signals way before the actual problem arises.

But we are so occupied that these signals never catch our attention. Even in mental illness such as depression and loneliness, we get signals way before.

In martial arts and traditional hatha yoga, we are trained to observe every single change happening within the body. From posture change, breathing style, heartbeat, to bowel movements and hormonal secretion.

An ordinary man does not need to be so advanced. He or she can see more gross signals.

If you can see those signals, we can take charge before things get worse. Some signals are:

  • Withdrawal from friends and family.
  • Physical aches.
  • Frequent emotional breakdowns.
  • Spikes in emotions.
  • Fatigue.
  • Insomnia.
  • Persistent sadness.
  • Helplessness & worthlessness.
  • Changes in appetite.

How To Get Out Of Loneliness?

Loneliness is a state of mind. Generally, what happens is that the person feels alone even if he or she is with someone.

  • What one needs to do is start making meaningful connections.
  • Talk to a friend, visit personally or call.
  • Try to go to get togethers.
  • Try to help someone in need, this is one of the most empowering actions.
  • Work with a life coach.

“While everyone is in a hurry to reach the unseen future, Sahil’s book comes as a reminder to dig into the already embedded indigenous wisdom within us. This is essential to us because a future without a firm rooting to who we are, almost never really feels holistic. When an Author endorses taking charge of our own life, it definitely causes a ripple effect in the collective too. Simple methods that are tried and tested sure make one expect more from Sahil.”
