Just some centuries ago, there was not much talk about holistic life or mental health in India and certain other parts of the world. There is a reason that they are both interconnected: mental wellness & holistic living.
Some centuries ago, a major portion of society was living a holistic life, and therefore there were not many health problems.
At this point in time, we are at a place in history where different generations are affected by the lack of holistic living. A person of the age of 60 and a person of the age of 16 are both lagging behind in certain sectors of life.
Let us dive in a little more…
What Is Holistic Living?
Holistic is a term that represents a wholesome effect. When we say holistic, we mean that almost everything is included.
When we say a holistic life, in a way, it means we are investing our time and energy in different segments of life. We are investing in relationships, in career, passion, health, spirituality, etc.
Why Were There No Life Coach In The Past?
Well, there were life coaches at all times. It is just that they were called by different names, Guru, Yogis, Saints, Mentor, Teachers, etc. As of now, life coaching has become a big trending option for a career. The gist of the profession is lost. But that’s not the topic we are discussing here.
In the past, life coaches or gurus used to guide people when they got lost in life. But this was mainly because of a spiritual quest within a certain portion of civilization. Mostly, it wasn’t a mental problem, or at least, the type of problems we see these days.
Why Were There Fewer Mental Health Problems In The Past?
In a way, people used to do something daily that would keep their health in good condition, relationships working, and kept them spiritually inclined. For eg, people walked so much to travel from one place to another, people didn’t have phones, so they would get together almost on a daily basis.
Such a lifestyle cannot give rise to mental health problems. Yes, people did have problems in their lives, but it wasn’t like the problems would eat them up.
What Is Holistic Life Coaching?
In layman’s terms, holistic life coaching is a process where the life coach, with time, sees the gaps in the life of the student and brings them to light.
Within a set time frame, with the help of the life coach, the student who is already successful in one or more sectors of life learns and creates a holistically successful life.
How Can Holistic Life Coaching Boost Mental Health?
Holistic Life is not a cure but a prevention. In my personal experience, there are certain problems that need serious psychiatric attention. However, many of the issues can be prevented if we can realize the importance of a balanced life.
Sometimes, what we need is simply love. Sometimes it is attention, sometimes it is company, sometimes it is just a me-time. You don’t need to go for a psychoanalysis for every problem you face in life.
What Should We Do For A Holistic Life?
Different people have different roles & responsibilities, and so the challenges they face are different. Holistic life will be different for different people.
However, there are a couple of things one can do to make one’s life a holistic success:
- Divide your life into different segments: health, relationship, passion, career, spirituality.
- Create a list of small goals in different segments.
- Write down your achievements in different segments of life.
- Prioritize your goals.
- Work mainly on the goals that are on your top priority list but also put enough attention on other goals.
These are some small steps anyone can take at home. If there are major challenges or bigger goals, I suggest working with a life coach. You can book your first appointment with me to explore different possibilities.
